Via Ferrata Strada degli Alpini (Alpinisteig in German) is a superbly scenic route in the Sesto Dolomites. Although the via ferrata is technically very straightforward and, therefore, suitable for beginners, it remains one of the most unique and rewarding via ferratas in the region.
The route follows an old wartime path, crossing the famous ledges Cengia della Salvezza, which were carved directly into the rocks. The combination of history, exposure and amazing views all the way makes this via ferrata an unforgettable experience.
If you are looking to build your instagram profile with epic Dolomite photos, Via ferrata Strada degli Alpini will not disappoint. It is one of my favorite routes in the area!
If you are planning a multi-day Sesto Dolomites adventure, consider including the Via Ferrata Strada degli Alpini as part of 4 day hut-to-hut itinerary: the Monte Popera Circuit.

Via Ferrata Strada Degli Alpini Stages
Stage 1: Approach to Rifugio Zsigmondy Comici
The via ferrata Strada Degli Alpini starts at Val Fiscalina, Hotel Dolomitenhof. First you need to follow the path 102 and the signs leading to Rifugio Valle Fondo. From the Valle Fondo follow the 102 path until you reach a junction – turn to path 103 towards Rifugio Zsigmondy Comici.
The approach to Rifugio Zsigmondy Comici is around ⏱ 3 hours and takes you 📈 750 meters up. It’s a significant elevation gain so I was happy to have a hut to stop at and get some snacks and a macchiato! The abundance of huts it one of the reasons why I love traveling in Italy. The view from the hut is amazing with Croda dei Toni mountain in all it’s glory. On top of that I got to say hi to few donkeys who were wandering around the hut. As I learned later on, Rifugio Zsigmondy Comici still relies on traditional “transport” and some of the supplies are brought up by animals, like the donkeys I saw.

Stage 2: Via Ferrata Strada Degli Alpini
From Rifugio Zsigmondy Comici take the path 101/103 leading towards Rifugio Carducci. Few years ago the path used to start at the scree field just in front of the hut. However there was a huge landslide recently and now there is a new path build on the left side of the field.
As you continue, you will reach Lago Ghiacciao, a small alpine lake. From here, the path branches north toward route 101 Alpinisteig (German for Ferrata Strada degli Alpini). Follow this trail until you reach the start of the ledges – this is where the via ferrata begins.

The whole route is incredibly scenic. Tre Cime di Lavaredo is always in eyesight. We stopped to make a lot of pictures on the way. The ferrata is easy, the ledges are wide. There was a gully filled with snow which we needed to cross, however it’s condition depends on the time of the season. I was taking the route at the end of August so there was barely any snow left after the summer. Nevertheless, if there is snow the passage will be secured by additional ropes if needed. This is usually done by mountain guides.
The Descent
After you exit the ledges – don’t yet take your gear off. The path will mostly take you further via scree fields, but there will be sections of climbing here and there.
Once you exit scree fields, it’s safe to take off the gear. The path continues further towards Rifugio Fondovalle val Fascalina and then loops back down into the Val Fascalina. The rifugio is an amazing stop to grab a drink or a snack before descending all the way down to the parking lot.

Via Ferrata Strada degli Alpini is one of the most scenic and enjoyable routes in the Dolomites. It combines history and breathtaking views into one unforgettable day.
Whether you are a beginner looking for your first via ferrata or an experienced adventurer wanting a relaxed but rewarding route – this one truly delivers.
