The Via Ferrata du Parc Thermal is a fascinating route in the French Alps. Located right in the heart of the Saint-Gervais-les-Bains resort, very close to Chamonix. This town has long been famous for its thermal springs and spa traditions – historically, people traveled here not only for the mountain air and views of Mont Blanc but also for mineral water treatments and to recover after long hikes or ski days.
The route begins just steps away from the historic Parc Thermal complex, making it the perfect opportunity to combine two experiences: an active mountain adventure followed by total relaxation in thermal pools and saunas!

** The Saint-Gervais tourism website lists the duration as 3h 30min, but for us, including the walk from the parking lot, it only took about 2 hours.**
Via Ferrata du Parc Thermal is categorized as Extremely Difficult with its toughest section reaching grade E. However, the route is heavily equipped with iron ladders and handles you almost never have to grip the raw rock. Technically it isn’t complex but good physical fitness and strong arms are essential. In many sections you must pull yourself up and hold your own body weight.
Because of all the aids this route feels a bit like an adventure park!
Via Ferrata du Parc Thermal: Stages and Progression
The Via Ferrata du Parc Thermal consists of three stages. Each stage is more difficult than the last but there is an escape route at the end of each section if it becomes too challenging.
Getting There: If arriving by car I recommend starting from the Saints Gervais-Télécabine Le Bettex parking lot. Once you leave the car – a beautiful forest trail leads you down to the starting point at the Parc Thermal spa complex.
Via ferrata du Parc Thermal Stage 1: The Start
The first stage begins with two hanging bridges. Below them you can hear the rushing mountain river – the entire route follows a narrow gorge! Immediately after the bridges a steep vertical climb begins. At first it’s hard to see where the route goes, it looks like the bridge ends at a dead wall. As you get closer the ladders come into focus. Even though you’re climbing ladders your arms will definitely feel it. Still, it is incredibly fun! The rest of the first stage involves traversing the gorge wall toward the waterfall. The end of Stage 1 is marked by an upward ladder that allows you to exit the gorge.

Via ferrata du Parc Thermal Stage 2: The Intensity Increases
As I began the second stage I could immediately notice it is significantly more difficult. Most sections were marked D/E. While climbing these parts I kept wondering when the next rest spot would appear. My arms really felt the pump! Luckily there was no shortage of places to take a break – several platforms are built into the route where you can sit down (remember to drink water and have a snack while you are there!).
What makes Stage 2 very exciting is that it features two bridges: a two-rope bridge and a three-rope bridge. The three-rope bridge is a staggering 45 meters long! I had to take deep breaths while crossing – it felt very long! This stage also contained the only section marked strictly as E. I was a bit nervous since an E rating usually means extreme difficulty but as is often the case – anticipation is scarier than reality. The E section was very short so the difficulty didn’t feel overwhelming.

Via ferrata du Parc Thermal Stage 3: The Waterfall Finish
The third stage continues the traverse and ends at a two-rope bridge directly over a stunningly beautiful waterfall. For some reason the ropes on this bridge were stretched asymmetrically, one slightly above the other. I had to adjust my walking position mid-crossing which is very unsettling on a two-rope bridge – it’s hard to keep your balance! For me this was the hardest part of the entire route but undoubtedly the most beautiful. Being that close to a massive waterfall is an unbelievable feeling.
You can see what the crossing of the two-rope bridge looks like in On Life and Mountains Instagram video.
After the via ferrata, we stopped in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains for a meal. We chose an Italian spot called Rond de Carotte—we love it and have visited several times.

The Via Ferrata du Parc Thermal can easily be paired with a visit to the Saint Gervais Parc Thermal. The complex features saunas and pools both indoors and outdoors. In the outdoor pools you can admire the mountains and treetops, all while listening to the sound of the waterfall. Very relaxing after Extremly Difficult via ferrata!
